Waterfront Project Background Information

Key Waterfront SitesKey Waterfront Sites

Marina Projects Ltd and their partner company PLC Architects were chosen by FIDC to develop Masterplan options for the Stanley Waterfront in August 2011 after a closed tender process.  Three representatives of Marina Projects Ltd and PLC Architects travelled to the Falkland Islands for a familiarisation visit and to meet with landowners, stakeholders and relevant FIG departments to discuss the Stanley Waterfront.

By the end of October 2011 Marina Projects and PLC Architects developed three Masterplan schemes for the Stanley Waterfront.  The schemes were presented to FIG’s Major Projects Board, MLA’s, Landowners and stakeholders.  The comments arising from these discussions were fed back to Marina Projects and PLC Architects.  In January 2012, prior to the second site visit and public consultation, Marina Projects and PLC Architects produced a second draft of the three Masterplan options to FIDC, all of which incorporate the comments from the groups mentioned above.

Waterfront Selected Scheme Summary

3D schematic of chosen option3D schematic of chosen optionThe main purpose of the masterplan is to provide a comprehensive urban design framework and development strategy for the Stanley waterfront and town centre. The scheme proposed is considered to best meet the objectives of both the Tourism Development Strategy (TDS) and the Economic Development Strategy (EDS).

It is important to understand and appreciate  that the scheme is a masterplan and is not an agreed design, the main principles of location and scale of development being the main factors considered at this stage.

It is likely that with further approvals the scheme will move towards the design phase when more detailed input will be required from all parties.
